My all time favorite comic book artist is still Todd McFarlane, but if I had to choose a cover artist it would be hands down, Alex Ross. His work is so detailed and life-like that you would swear it was either airbrushed or paintings overlapping real photo's. The depth of his paintings and the character expressions are just unbelievable. Because his art technique is so time consuming, Mr. Ross isn't able to give us much more than covers but the covers that he's created over the past 15 years or so have really impacted the comic industry in a positive way. A lot of his art has gone mainstream, especially in these times when every major motion picture has some type of super hero theme to it. Alex Ross is really in a class by himself. Sure he could hammer out page after page of penciled super hero goodness but instead he chose (luckily for us) the most difficult medium to be in and that's brush painting. I've dabbled in it and my best painting took 6 to 8 hours to finish in acrylic so the same painting would have taken 3 times that amount in oil. I couldn't imagine trying to fit the detail that his paintings possess and yet he has been able to create some of the best works of our generation. Even if you've never heard of Alex Ross, I have a feeling that you've seen his work somewhere. Check his stuff out and tell me his work isn't unbelievable.
Ain't it good to G!
